Marlboro cigarettes are currently produced by Philip Morris Tobacco Company. The brand was named after the London Street where the Cigarette Factory was located. This brand was first introduced in the market in the year 1902 and it soon became the favorite brand among Americans. In 2001 Marlboro Cigarettes were recognized as the most popular tobacco brand in the United States. This brand is currently distributed by Altria Tobacco Company in the United States, and by Philip Morris International, which is a separate entity from Altria, outside the United States. Marlboro is also well recognizes by the non-smoking population for its billboard and magazine advertisements for Marlboro man. The brand is named after Great Marlborough Street, the place of its original London factory. Richmond, Virginia is currently the location of the largest Marlboro cigarette factory.

Marlboro cigarettes were very famous till the end of the Second World War but after that its fortunes changed and its sales figures plummeted, so it was temporarily removed from the market. In the 1950's some brands emerged to establish firm hold on the cigarette market and Marlboro was one of them.

In the 50's Reader's Digest magazine published a series of articles that linked smoking with lung cancer. This startled the smoking population and they became very health conscious. The manufactures of Marlboro, Philip Morris and many other top tobacco producing companies began to market filtered cigarettes. The new Marlboro with a filter in it was launched in 1955. In the early 1960's Philip Morris was looking for a new Marlboro icon that would attract men to this brand, they were looking for something manly and something new. They came up with a concept called Marlboro Man, which became an instant success and for decades "Marlboro Man" donned the billboards, banners, cafes, and all advertising campaigns.
